International protection is valid in one or more countries signatory to the Madrid Protocol. Your international application is based on a national application. When you have applied for national protection, you submit your application for international protection to us at PRV. We then send it on to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), in Geneva.
Languages and applications
Your international application must be written in English. In the application, you state which countries you want the protection to be valid in (designation). When PRV receives the application, we check that it meets the formal requirements and we also certify that it agrees with your national application or registration. WIPO then carries out a formal examination. If it is approved, it is given a registration number and the countries that you chose to designate are notified. Those countries then have 12-18 months to examine your application according to their trademark laws.
You can submit your application by post or in person at our reception on Kungsgatan 8 in Söderhamn or on Valhallavägen 136 in Stockholm. If you fax in your application, you must also remember to sign and post the original application.
If you would like to know more or order application forms, please contact our customer support. More information is also available on WIPO's website.
