You have the right to create a surname by using your father's or mother's first name and adding -son, -sson or -dotter. The main rule is that male applicants can add the endings -son or -sson and female applicants can add the endings -son, -sson or -dotter.

Example

Eva Czarnecki wants to change her surname as it is difficult to spell. She wants a name linked to her family, but cannot find one that seems right. Eva's father is called Georg. She considers both the names Georgsson and Georgsdotter, but then decides on Georgsson.
