Validation of a patent

Once the EPO has granted a patent, it can either be validated in each country where it is to be valid or become a unitary patent.

A European patent application is filed with and examined by the EPO. Should patent be granted, the patent holder may choose if the patent should have unitary effect or be validated in those countries where it ought to be effective. Validation is a formal measure, subject to a fee, through which the patent gains protection nationally.
