When you send in your application, you can choose how many five-year periods your registration will be valid for. You can also renew your registration at the end of every five-year period. At most, you can protect your design for 25 years. Your registration counts from the date you filed your application for design protection.

Different ways to renew your design

If you want to renew your design registration without making any changes, there are three ways to choose from. 

• Through the e-service Design Renewal.
  By using the e-service and paying by card or through your internet bank or deposit account with PRV, your design registration is renewed for five years once we have registered your application. You pay a lower fee if you use the e-service.

• By paying the fee.
  You can also apply for renewal by paying the fee into our bank giro. Write on the payment slip what the payment concerns and provide the registration number for your design. However, remember that the fee will become more expensive if you choose this way.

• By sending in a form.
  You can send an application for renewal by email or letter. Remember that the fee will become more expensive if you choose this way. With a paper application, you can both renew and apply for changes at the same time.

Keep this in mind 

You can apply for renewal no earlier than one year before and no later than six months after a registration period has expired. The fee is higher if you send in the application after the registration period has expired. 

If you do not pay the fee or if the fee is received too late, we remove your design registration from the design register, and it thereby ceases to be valid.  

Everyone can apply for renewal 

Anyone can apply for renewal. There is no requirement that the person who applies is the holder or must otherwise verify his or her right to the design.  

If your renewal application has been rejected 

If you have applied to renew a design registration that is no longer valid, you receive a rejection decision from PRV. If you already paid the fee, we will refund your application fee. 

Time until notification 

If you choose to renew your design registration via our e-service, the registration is renewed immediately.
If you apply on a paper form, pay by bank giro or have a deposit account with PRV, it currently takes 8–10 weeks before you receive notification. 

Change 

If you also need to make a change in your registration in connection with renewing your design registration, you can make the changes before you apply for renewal. A change may for example be a: 

• New address
• New holder
• New representative
• Limitation of classes or removal of model

Remember that if you use the e-service Design Renewal, you cannot make any changes in the registration.
