Protection of geographical indications for non-agricultural products
The European Commission has launched a public consultation on a possible regulatory framework for the protection of geographical indications for non-agricultural products and invites various stakeholders to comment. At present, there is only a regulatory framework at EU level to protect geographical indications for agricultural products, wine and spirits, but now the Commission wants to examine whether there is a need to protect, for example, handicrafts, industrial products and certain natural resources. There are currently no national Swedish rules on geographical indications, but the Swedish designations are protected by EU directives. About half of EU Member States have some form of national legislation on geographical indications.
