Renewal and recordals regarding national trademarks
Take care of your trademark - remember to renew the trademark registration and send in any recordals regarding the registration.
A trademark registration is valid for ten years
Your exclusive right to the trademark is valid for ten years. After that you can renew the registration for ten years at a time, an unlimited number of times.
Please note that applications filed after 2019-01-01 are valid for ten years from the application date. Applications submitted before that are valid for ten years from the registration date.
Who can apply for renewal?
Anyone can apply for renewal. You do not have to be the owner or in any way prove your right to the trademark registration.
Renew by paying
If you want to renew a trademark registration without making any changes, you use the online application Swedish trademark renewal. That is the easiest and most inexpensive way to renew.
By using the online application and paying with a credit card or an internet bank, the trademark registration is automatically renewed for ten years as soon as we receive your application. We send the renewal certificate to the e-mail address that you have entered in your application. The renewal fee is reduced when you use the online application.
You can also apply for renewal by paying the fee via bankgiro. Put the trademark registration number on the payment slip and state that it relates to trademark renewal.
You can apply for renewal six months before the expiration date at the earliest and six months after the expiration date at the latest. The fee is increased if you apply after the expiration date.
The payment period starts the date the trademark is registered. The fee varies depending on how many classes the registration covers.
If you do not pay the fee or if PRV receives it too late, your trademark will be removed from the trademark registry and the registration will no longer be valid.
Applying for recordal
When you renew a trademark registration you can also apply for recordals such as:
- change of address
- transfer of ownership
- change of representation
If you want to apply for recordal in conjunction with the renewal of a trademark registration it is recommended that you do it prior to the renewal.
Resume a dismissed renewal application
PRV can resume a dismissed renewal application. You need to pay a fee and remedy any problems with your application. It is important that you do this within two months. The last day to resume an application is based on the deadline of the letter issued before the dismissal.
Please note that an application for recordal cannot be resumed.
